Macocha Abyss is situated north of Brno in the area called Moravian Karst.
It is over 148 m deep. The world-famous karst region lies in the territory of the Czech Republic, in Moravia, not far from Brno. The shape of the region has been carved out by the running water ever since the region was left by the sea many geological epochs ago.
The activity of the running water in the underlying limestone can be seen not only on the surface in deep valleys, karst canyons with sinkholes and resurgences of the sunken watercourses, dolines, and abysses, but also deep underground, where the subterranean rivers and collapse processes have been creating the cave system until the present day. The Punkva Caves were discovered by Professor Karel Absolon.
